Cozumel is one of the most visited cruise ports in the northern hemisphere. However, relatively few visitors ever visit the wild side — the east side of the island. From jungle lined roads to beautiful ocean views, a tour of the east side is a wonderfuly relaxing and low key way to spend a day in port.
The drive is easy enough to do yourself with a rental car or you can hire a driver for the day. We booked a custom private jeep tour with Jeep Riders Cozumel. If you know you will be enjoying a few adult beverages on your journey, as we did, the smart choice is to book one of these tours so that you have a designated driver. Although the website states you must drive the vehicle, once you get on the road your driver will fill you in on the details and will be glad to take over the driving.
On our tour, we stopped at 4 bars — Mezcalito's the Last Frontier, Coconuts, Welcome to Miami — on the east side and one, the Money Bar, on the west side before heading back to the port. Fun fact: the east side of Cozumel has no electricity, although some of the bars use generator for limited power. Word to the wise, bathrooms on this side of the island can be primitive!
This is a great option for those who've been to Cozumel before, those who've done Chankanaab afnd the resort passes or those who aren't really beach people, like us.
